Tour & Tasting of Johnstons Cranberry Marsh & Wenonah II Boat Cruise

On Saturday, September 22, 29 individuals ventured off for a very full day of sightseeing, tasting, boat riding and eating. It was an early crisp morning start, catching a bus here in Campbellford and going to our first stop at Johnston’s Cranberry Marsh.
We were greeted by one of the owners and told we were going to have a small wine tasting as part of their new venture at the marsh. 7 wines in total were tasted from a very, very dry wine to an extremely sweet one made with maple syrup and cranberries. They referred to this one as their dessert wine. “I can see why!”
From the wine tasting we were escorted to a double wagon which was towed by a tractor not horses. We toured the cranberry marsh itself as the guide told us how they were harvested and what time of year. Usually they would have been starting the harvest the weekend we arrived but due to weather conditions over the past few weeks not being quite favorable, they were holding off for another week. The berries themselves looked very plump and red.
Contrary to what people believe, cranberries do not grow in water. The roots themselves are embedded into peat moss. If the plants themselves become immersed in water they go dormant as they believe it is time to stop producing. There is however, irrigation ditches filled with water all around to help in the watering process in case of drought.
When they are ready to harvest, the areas are flooded and the ripe berries float to the top, making it easy to scoop up and place into the harvesting machines.
They have a very complete operation going. They pick, pack, freeze, make wine, ship, etc, etc, etc, to all around the globe.
From the cranberry farm we went to the Blue Willow Tea Room for a light lunch and well deserved break before boarding the Wenonah II for a 2 hour cruise around the Muskoka Lakes.
Please take a few minutes to view our gallery for a look at some of the sights of the march as well as around the lakes.

  2. Cirque Du Soleil - Corteo

Oshawa - On June 24, 21 members took the short ride to Oshawa to see this fabulous performance. There was close to three hours of acrobatics and singing going on, on the floor of the Tribute centre. Not all was in English but if you followed the story line it wasn't hard to figure out what they it was all about.

  3. Fundraiser for local food bank

The Campbellford Seniors club hosted a fundraiser on Sunday, September 23, 2018, for the local food bank. There was an overwhelming response with donations of non perishable food items coming in ahead of time to help out with the efforts.  We started the afternoon off with regular and bid euchre as well as a section for board games for those who do not play cards. In total 51 individuals came in to show their support.

It was a $5 entry fee to play whatever game you would like to. Draw tickets were also made available at a cost of 3/$5, this draw had a little twist to it... There was no cash handed out for draws but instead several items had been donated and were given in lieu of cash. This made it possible to raise more funds.  With cash/cheque donations, draw sales and entry, we were able to raise over $400 and several of the executive decided to raise the amount to an even $500.

The winners for the day were: Bid Euchre: 1st Shirley Grills, 214; 2nd Nancy Soulliere, 191; Ruth Hall, 190. Regular Euchre: 1st Jan Rutherford, 71; 2nd Tressa Glenn, 66; 3rd Nancy Stevens, 64. Games: 1st Kathy Cooper; 2nd Tim Lisle; 3rd Pearly Terry.
    Congratulations to all
Overall the afternoon was a huge success and many thanks goes out to the volunteers who helped to make this afternoon possible.

We were then served a lovely meal of chicken, sandwiches, shrimp, salads and desserts along with coffee and tea. After our meal Micheal took us on a tour of the facilities and explained all the upgrades they were doing and have done.

    • New Signage for Seniors - Grand Rd.

Seniors’ Club Location Article & Image By Sue Dickens Advocating for the safety of seniors, the Campbellford Senior Citizens’ Club is jubilant about the decision for the placement of signage near the Forrest Dennis Seniors Centre, at 55 Grand Road, Campbellford.

The club’s President John Mancini and First Vice President Heather McCallum have been focusing their attention on the need for signage for those seniors who cross Grand Road from the apartment building on the opposite side of this busy street. There was a petition they circulated and many dozens of seniors had signed in the hopes of some kind of solution. John notes that the concern over seniors crossing Grand Road has been an ongoing one for many years, through several presidencies at the club. “We’re so glad this has been resolved,” said John. Heather agreed. “I/m overjoyed, it’s been a long time.”

It was Neil Allanson, Manager of Roads and Urban Services with the Municipality of Trent Hills, who made the decision about the signage. Heather explained: “We took pictures of the signs that are in Norwood and sent them to Neil to see what we are proposing because we realized that a crosswalk wasn’t going to work here. First of all we approached the County of Northumberland who looked at it and were in support then turned around and sent it back to Neil because the signs would have to be on the property of the Municipality of Trent Hills.” Neil explained: “The Municipality will be installing two Pedestrian Ahead signs with a Seniors Tab sign in advance of the seniors’ parking lot on Grand Road. There will be one sign facing north and one sign facing south.” Neil added, “Some of the guidelines for using these particular signs are park areas, near senior citizens’ centres, retirement homes, adult lifestyle communities, and other locations where there are large volumes of senior citizen pedestrian traffic.”

In terms of what will happen to the petition, Heather noted, “We’re going to hang onto the petition because I think at this point it’s given us some ideas as to how we go about doing things to get what we need.” The club is also part of USCO (The United Senior Citizens of Ontario), “and there're other senior clubs that need the same kind of support…so we have ideas of how they can proceed to get what they need to make their place safe,” she added.

John Mancini concluded, “I am delighted the town is helping our seniors for safe passage on Grand Road. It is an important issue on our part. We are glad Neil was able to help us.” The signage is expected to be installed within the next 2 1/2 to three weeks from the time of the decision which was made mid-June, 2018.

Aging with Humour
A Riddle

There's a queer little house that stands in the sun;
When the good mother calls, the children all run.
While under her roof it is cozy and warm,
Though the cold wind may whistle and bluster and storm.

In the daytime this queer little house moves away,
And all the children run after, so happy and gay;
But it comes back at night and the children are fed,
And tucked up to sleep in their warm, cozy bed.

This queer little house has no windows nor doors;
The roof has no shingles, the rooms have no floors.
No fireplaces, chimneys, no stoves can you see,
Yet the children are cozy and warm as can be.

The story of this little house is quite true;
I have seen it myself and I'm sure you have too.
You can see it to-night, if you'll watch the old hen,
While her downy wings cover her children again.

The Story of the Christmas Guest

Adapted by Helen Steiner Rice from an old German Legend
It happened one day at the year's white end;
Two neighbors called on an old-time friend.
They found his shop, so meager and mean,
Made bright with a thousand boughs of green .
And Conrad was sitting with face a-shine,
When he suddenly stopped as he stitched a tw ine,
And said, "Old friends, at dawn today,
When the cock was crowing the night awa y,
"The Lord appeared in a dream to me,
And said, `I'm coming your guest to be. '
So I've been busy with feet astir,
Strewing my shop with branches of fir.
"The table is spread and the kettle is shined
And over the rafters, the holly is twined.
And now I will wait for my Lord to appear ,
And listen closely so I will hear
His step as He nears my humble pla ce,
And I open the door and look in His face ."
So his friends went home and left Conrad alone,
For this was the happiest day he had known.
For long since, his family had passed away,
And Conrad had spent a sad Christmas Day.
But he knew with his Lord as his Christmas Guest,
This Christmas would be the dearest and best.
He listened with only joy in his heart,
And with every sound, he would rise with a start.
And look for the Lord to be standing there,
In answer to his earnest prayer.
So he ran to the window after hearing a sound,
But all that he saw on the snow-covered ground…
Was a shabby beggar whose shoes were torn,
And all of his clothes were ragged and worn.
So Conrad was touched and went to the door,
And he said , "Your feet must be frozen and sore .
I have some shoes in my shop for you,
And a coat that will keep you warmer, too ."
So with grateful heart, the man went away,
But as Conrad noticed the time of day,
He wondered what made his dear Lord so l ate,
And how much longer he'd have to wait.
When he heard a knock, he ran to the doo r,
But it was only a stranger once more;
A bent old crone with a shawl of black ,
A bundle of branches piled on her back.
She asked for only a place to rest,
But that was reserved for Conrad's Great Guest.
But her voice seemed to plead, "Don't send me awa y,
Let me rest for a while on Christmas Day."
So Conrad brewed her a steaming cup,
And told her to sit at the table and sup.
But after she left, he was filled with disma y,
For he saw that the hours were passing away .
The Lord had not come, as He said He would,
And Conrad felt sure he had misunderstood.
Out of the stillness, he heard a cry,
"Please help me and tell me where am I?"
He stood disappointed, as twice before,
But shook off his sadness and went to the do or.
It was only a child who had wandered away,
And was lost from her family on Christmas Da y.
Again Conrad's heart was heavy and sad
But he knew he should make this little girl g lad.
So he called her in and wiped her tears,
And quieted all her childish fears.
Then he led her back to her home once m ore.
But as he entered his darkened door,
He knew that the Lord was not coming today
For the hours of Christmas had passed away.
So he went to his room and knelt down to pray ,
And he said, "Dear Lord, why did You delay?
"What kept You from coming to call on me?
For I wanted so much Your face to see."
When soft in the silence, a voice he heard :
"Lift up your head, for I kept My Word.
"Three times My shadow crossed your floor,
Three times I came to your lonely door.
For I was the beggar with bruised, cold fee t.
I was the woman you gave to eat.
And I was the child on the homeless street."

A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband.
Suddenly, her husband burst into the kitchen. “Careful,” he started, “CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! Oh my gosh! You’re cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh my gosh! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They’re going to STICK! Careful. CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you’re cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don’t forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them. Use. The. Salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!”

The wife stared at him, irritated and bewildered. “What in the world is wrong with you? You think I don’t know how to fry a couple of eggs?”

The husband calmly replied, “I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I’m driving.”

HE GOT HER! But we have a feeling she’s not done in this battle.

I've sure gotten old! I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes. I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to black-outs. Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92. Have lost all my friends. But, thank God, I still have my driver's license.

I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.

An elderly woman decided to prepare her will and told her preacher she had two final requests. First, she wanted to be cremated, and second, she wanted her ashes scattered over Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart?" the preacher exclaimed. "Why Wal-Mart?" Then I'll be sure my daughters visit me twice a week."

My memory's not as sharp as it used to be. Also, my memory's not as sharp as it used to be.

The Senility Prayer

Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.
